Meet Danna Copulos
This Month's Spotlighted Skilled Nursing Resident
At 94 years old, Danna Copulos has plenty of reasons to smile. Surrounded by wonderful friends, attentive caregivers, and a community filled with warmth and activity, Danna continues to embrace life with gratitude and enthusiasm.
Before living her best life at Pomperaug Woods, Danna was born in Greece and came to America shortly after graduating from high school. A trip to the Catskills with a friend led her to meet John Copulos, the man she would be married to for the next 55 years. They raised three sons in Queens, NY, while Danna put in 19 years working at an ad agency. After retirement, the couple moved to North Carolina, where Danna later cared for John after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. After John passed, Danna’s heart pulled her closer to her family, and she moved to Westchester, NY, into a small mother-in-law home next to her son’s house.
A Postcard and a Sign
When her son needed to sell the property, Danna wasn’t sure what to do next. “I asked God to guide me, and the very next day I got a postcard in the mail from Pomperaug Woods,” Danna said. “I thought this must be a sign.” She booked a tour that same day, and as soon as she visited the community, she fell in love with it. She moved into Independent Living in 2021.
Like a Miracle
Danna was enjoying fun and friends in Independent Living for almost 5 years, but in 2026 she took a fall that left her in the hospital with a broken spine. “I honestly thought I was going to die,” she said. But when she was discharged to the Pomperaug Woods Health Center, her attitude changed. “It was like a miracle. I knew I would be all right.”
Spa Days, Every Day
“I truly love it here. It’s like living at a spa.” said Danna. “The staff is so attentive and kind. The atmosphere is very loving. The environment is beautiful. The food is wonderful. This is the place people come to get healthy again.”
Danna’s days at the “spa” are very full. “Kate Petersen, the Director of Resident Health Services, is just amazing,” said Danna. “She brings in entertainment for us every day. Plus, we have seated exercise classes, weekly gardening lectures, a history class, and travelogues. And when the weather is nice, the whole group heads out to the patio, exercise class included.”
More Friends, More Fun
“What makes this place so special is the people,” said Danna. Friends from Independent Living pop over to visit her frequently. “I see my old friends, and I’ve made more friends living in the Health Center. It’s a beautiful life!”
