Meet Sally Bourgault
This Month's Spotlighted Independent Living Resident
At almost 92 years old, Sally Bourgault says she is finally coming out of her shell. “Living at Pomperaug Woods, I feel so safe and secure,” said Sally. “It gives me the courage to meet new people, try new things, live on my own, and enjoy my life on my own terms for what feels like the first time ever. I never thought moving to a senior living community could feel so empowering, but every day I discover something new about myself. It is the most wonderful change, and I feel more like myself now than I ever have.”
Sally grew up in Massachusetts, then moved to California after she married, and lived on the West Coast for 54 years. “California was fine, but my heart was always in New England,” said Sally. “After raising my two sons, I worked as a school administrative assistant for 10 years, then took a position as a legal secretary in a corporate law office for 15 years. Two young men walked into the office one day, and said they had an idea. My boss took a chance on them and represented them as they started their business. Those two young men were Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. I witnessed the founding of Apple Computer. It was really quite something. I absolutely loved that job. After I retired, I felt like I just wanted to ‘come home.’ One day I made up my mind, got on a plane, moved to Avon, Connecticut, to be near my son, and enjoyed that for 14 years. When he retired and moved to Arizona, my granddaughter invited me to move to Southbury to be near her. We toured two senior living communities together. There was absolutely no question that Pomperaug Woods was the place for me. The community is so beautiful. Everything is cheerful and bright. The staff is so welcoming, and the residents are all very friendly. I can’t get over how kind everyone is.”

Sally didn’t know a soul when she moved to Pomperaug Woods. “I started small by joining the book club,” said Sally. “Then I went to the Current Events sessions. It was great to have the freedom to just sit and listen to the discussions without feeling pressure to speak up if I didn’t want to. Then I started taking the exercise classes with Megan, the Wellness Coordinator. She is wonderful and really inspiring. My neighbor, May Bernhard, founded the Pomperaug Players theater group, and she invited me to join. I’ve never done theater in my life, but I’m having fun playing small parts in the productions. Now I go to the concerts and lectures that interest me. I play Rummikub several days a week. And the food is so good that I’ve gained 10 pounds since moving here a year ago! I love my apartment. I love the activities. I’m genuinely happy, and that is something not everyone finds in their 90’s. How lucky am I?”
Sally’s two sons, two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren can all see how happy she is at Pomperaug Woods. “Moving to Pomperaug Woods has completely changed my outlook on life,” said Sally. “This feels like home.”
We are so glad you feel comfortable here, Sally. Pomperaug Woods is richer for your presence.
