Meet Ida Ressler

This Month's Spotlighted Independent Living Resident

Ida Ressler lived in Waterbury for almost 70 years. “I grew up there, and after I was married, my husband started his dental practice there, so we raised our family in Waterbury,” said Ida. “I love this area of Connecticut. It feels like home to me.”

Ida and her husband, Irving, were married for 45 years. After he passed, Ida moved to Heritage Village. “I lived there on my own for 20 years,” said Ida. “By age 88, I knew it was time to move to a community where I would have support if I ever needed it. I toured several different communities, but Pomperaug Woods felt like the best fit. I brought my children to take a look, they all said, ‘This feels like a beautiful New England inn. You’re going to be so happy here.’ And I have been happy from the minute I moved in.”

Ida had only lived at Pomperaug Woods for four short months when she fell and broke her hip. “You can never predict when you’ll take a fall, and I’m so glad I was here when it happened,” said Ida. “I was living in the right place at the right time. I went from the hospital to the Pomperaug Woods rehab for two weeks. They took wonderful care of me, and I was back in my apartment and living independently again in no time. The staff at Pomperaug Woods is so caring. They treat you like family.”

Ida quickly resumed her busy life after her stay in the Health Center. “I play Bridge every week,” said Ida. “I love the Current Events discussion group and am happy to lead it once a month. I walk every day and use the Fitness Center regularly. I love to go to the Cocktail Hour every Friday and chat with friends. Lisa Huebenthal is the Director of Community Life here, and she is a treasure. There’s no one like her. She is so creative, and she puts together a full activities calendar for us every month. There’s always something interesting to do. I go to all the musical programs and performances.”

When Ida isn’t out and about in the community, she’s thrilled to enjoy her peaceful apartment. “It’s a beautiful corner apartment on the first floor,” said Ida. “I sit out on my patio, and it’s like living in a park. The landscaping of our campus is absolutely beautiful.”

What is the one thing Ida never uses in her apartment? “The oven,” laughed Ida. “I’ve never used it once. I’ve graduated. No more cooking for me! I enjoy getting together with friends at dinner in the dining room.”

What is Ida’s advice for those considering a move to a senior living community? “Don’t wait too long to make a move,” said Ida. “Come to Pomperaug Woods while you’re active and healthy so you can enjoy everything this community has to offer. It’s a wonderful place!”

Brooke has one piece of advice for families dealing with a loved one’s memory loss. “A person’s health can decline quickly, and you need experienced assistance to navigate a changing situation,” said Brooke. “Pomperaug Woods is a care partner you can trust.”

We’re so glad you’re happy here, Ida. Your warm personality brings everyone joy!
