Meet Rita Frost

This Month's Spotlighted Independent Living Resident

Rita L. Frost has walked the road less traveled. “I let my love of art and travel lead me on the adventure of a lifetime,” said Rita. “I pursued my art education in San Francisco, CA, and Florence, Italy, and became a successful abstract impressionist painter. I exhibited my paintings in shows across the Northeast including the Greenwich Village Art Show, and I’ve sold well over 2,000 paintings and watercolors during my lifetime. I lived in NYC for 40 years, and while I pursued my art, I was also a NYC tour guide and an overseas tour conductor. I’ve been to 40 different countries, and I’ve created 48 YouTube videos of my travels. I married the love of my life, Francis Caro, when we were both in our 50’s, and we were lucky enough to have 10 wonderful years together.”

“We moved to Newtown, CT,” she continued, “and had a beautiful home with a pool and gardens. During our marriage I took up photography and invested time writing poetry. I have written hundreds of poems capturing very emotional moments in my life, and had a few pieces published. After Francis passed, the house and gardens were becoming too much to maintain by myself. I decided to downsize and move to a senior living community. The minute I walked through the sunny halls of Pomperaug Woods, everything fell into place. I am genuinely happy at how this new adventure is unfolding.”

Rita knew downsizing was going to be a challenge. “I pushed myself to keep going. I said to myself, ‘Open a new door. Have a new adventure. Meet new people. Just empty this house, and the next adventure is waiting for you at Pomperaug Woods.’ I now live in a 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment, and it has room for at least 20 of my paintings. I love being surrounded by my art!”

Rita knew she needed to find a community that would welcome her cats. “I think life is richer when you can share it with a pet,” said Rita. “I have two cats — William Mush Mush and an Abyssinian named Shayna — and they have transitioned beautifully to living here.”

Rita has heartfelt advice for anyone considering what to do in the next chapter of their life. “Take the leap and find your next adventure,” said Rita. “My adventure at Pomperaug Woods is all about freedom. Here, I am free from the chores of cooking, cleaning, and home maintenance. I have opportunities to socialize that I never had before — eating with different people in the dining room or playing mahjongg and canasta. Next month, I’ll be sharing my photography as part of an art show. Living here, I don’t have to worry about the ‘what ifs’ of tomorrow. I can just enjoy the present moment. And I find that truly comforting!”

We’re happy to be on this adventure with you, Rita. Your zest for living is contagious!
