Meet Jean Berechid and her daughter, Bridget
This Month's Spotlighted Skilled Nursing Family
When Jean Berechid moved to Pomperaug Woods in 2013, she was looking for an active lifestyle and a welcoming community. What neither she nor her daughter, Bridget, could have known was how valuable that decision would become years later.
“My mom did me such a kindness by choosing Pomperaug Woods,” said Bridget. “It was the best decision she could have made — for both of us.”
As a new resident, Jean quickly embraced community life. A former biologist and Pharmaceutical Information Scientist, she brought her energy and curiosity to everything she did. She chaired committees, took exercise and art classes, joined day trips, attended happy hours, and spent countless afternoons with her beloved “ladies who lunch”.
“She was involved in everything right from the start,” said Bridget. “She truly loves it here.”
Last year, Jean suffered a fall that resulted in a broken hip. Suddenly, she needed a higher level of care. “It was an overwhelming time,” Bridget said. “But because Mom was already living here, so much of the uncertainty immediately evaporated.”
Instead of searching for a health center, completing endless paperwork, and moving into an unfamiliar environment, Jean simply transitioned to the Health Center she already knew. Many of the caregivers were familiar faces from previous rehabilitation stays. Her friends were still nearby. Her community remained intact. “I can’t imagine how difficult this transition would have been if Mom had still been living on her own,” said Bridget. “Instead of scrambling to find care, I just made one phone call. The staff made it a smooth transition for my mother,” said Bridget. “They don’t just care for her — they love her. They are fabulous.”
Today, Jean receives daily physical and occupational therapy, enjoys activities and entertainment, visits with longtime friends, and continues to be surrounded by people who know her well. “My sole focus is on spending quality time with her,” said Bridget. “I still get to be her daughter, not her caregiver.”
For Bridget, that’s the true value of Pomperaug Woods — not just the vibrant years Jean enjoyed in Independent Living, but the peace of mind that came when life took an unexpected turn.
“Mom chose a community that would be there for her no matter what,” said Bridget. “And I’m grateful every day that she did.”
We love that Jean has been part of the Pomperaug Woods family for 13 wonderful years. That beautiful smile brings joy to us all!
