Meet Jerry & Barbara Grant
This Month's Spotlighted Independent Living Residents
A Life Built Together
Jerry and Barbara Grant have spent nearly six decades building a life centered on service, education, and caring for others. They met in 1967 while Jerry was working as a lifeguard and Barbara was vacationing with her family. Married a year later, their partnership carried them through Army service during the Vietnam War, meaningful careers, and retirement together. Jerry spent his career as a middle school guidance counselor, special education advocate, and adolescent therapist. Barbara taught high school before becoming a social worker helping stroke survivors and their families adjust accordingly. After retiring in 2004, they enjoyed 20 happy years at Heritage Village.
Finding the Right Partner
Barbara was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2022, and three years later they knew it was time to plan ahead. They wanted a Continuing Care Retirement Community that could support their changing health needs while allowing them to continue living life on their own terms. “Nothing compared to Pomperaug Woods,” said Barbara. “It’s warm, welcoming, and it allowed us to stay close to our doctors, church, and friends.” Jerry agreed. “We’ve partnered with a community that can support us as our needs change.”
Living Well Every Day
Since moving to Pomperaug Woods in August 2025, Jerry and Barbara have embraced community life. Jerry stays active with pickleball, golf, fitness workouts, Food Committee, and Friday happy hours. Barbara loves the book club, the fitness center, chef-prepared meals, and the thoughtful support of the staff. Together, they enjoy the community’s musical and theatrical performances.
“I made a conscious decision to become part of this community from Day 1,” Jerry said. “I’ve met more people here in one year than I did in 20 years living in Heritage Village.”
For Barbara, the community’s focus on wellness is about far more than healthcare.“Wellness is about friendships, purpose, and enjoying life,” she said. “Pomperaug Woods gives us the independence we value while anticipating what we’ll need in the future.”
Their advice to anyone considering a move? Start planning before you have to. Think about what matters today as well as what you’ll need in the future. As Jerry puts it, “You’re creating a partnership with the community you choose. Make sure it’s one that will grow with you.”
