Meet Edwin Hord
This Month's Spotlighted Independent Living Residents
A Life Measured by What Matters Most
At 88 years old, Edwin Hord has learned the things that matter most in life aren’t measured in square footage or possessions. They’re measured in the people you love, the friendships you cherish, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re exactly where you belong.
“When I think about what makes me happy, it was never the house,” Edwin said. “It was always the people I connected with through that house. I am the most fortunate guy on earth. I have a lovely family.”
A Career of Creativity and Communication
Edwin moved to Pomperaug Woods in May 2026 after a career that blended science, art, and communication. Following graduate studies in medical illustration, he spent much of his career at NASA, creating instructional programs that made complex technical information easier to understand. Even in retirement, he still enjoys the occasional writing and illustration project.
A Move That Felt Right
After retiring, Edwin and his wife, Mary, moved to Connecticut to be closer to their two children and five grandchildren. Following Mary’s passing after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Edwin remained in his home until his children began to worry about him managing the house and large yard alone. “Sometimes it’s hard to recognize when it’s the right time to downsize,” said Edwin. “I trust my children implicitly, and when they came to me with concerns, I knew they were looking out for me.”
His daughter brought him to tour Pomperaug Woods. “I could immediately see it was a safe, healthy, happy place,” Edwin said. “I have friends from my church here, so the transition was easy.”
Living Well Every Day
Today, Edwin enjoys a peaceful first-floor apartment and a lifestyle free from the worries of home maintenance. “The residents are friendly, the staff is wonderful, and there’s always someone inviting me to play pool, share a meal, or enjoy the entertainment,” Edwin said.
Most of all, Edwin appreciates the freedom this new chapter of life has given him. “When you give yourself permission to enjoy life, the whole world opens up to you,” said Edwin. “Pomperaug Woods isn’t just a senior living community — it’s a community where people are truly living well.”
