Meet Fran Leili
This Month's Spotlighted Resident
As a clinical psychologist, Fran Leili lives a life of conscious choice. “If you’re going to make a change in life, I think it’s important not to wait too long,” said Fran. “At age 84, I chose to move to Pomperaug Woods while I’m still capable of forming meaningful relationships, trying new experiences, and having the energy to make a full life for myself. Finding a beautiful balance in this new stage of life between independence and support is within reach for everyone, and it’s especially attainable when you live at such a warm and welcoming place as Pomperaug Woods.”
Fran spent many happy years in Connecticut balancing time as a mom, raising three children with her career as a clinical psychologist. “After my children were grown, I moved across the country to California to expand my career,” said Fran. “For 27 years I led a very full life, balancing rewarding work and great friends. At age 80, a few health issues made it clear to me that perhaps it would be wise to live near family again. So, I started searching for a senior living community in Connecticut near my children, but I wanted a CCRC (continuing care retirement community) so I could maintain my independence. Pomperaug Woods stood out to me for three reasons. First, I was very impressed that it was a non-profit community. I have worked for many non-profit entities in my career, and I know from experience that non-profits are very stable. Second, I was very taken with the beauty of this community. Pomperaug Woods feels like a country inn to me, not a sterile ‘facility.’ And third, I was drawn in by the friendliness of the staff. I feel a personal connection with so many people here, and that is very reassuring.”
Most of the Pomperaug Woods community features apartments with several different floor plans, but there are also six cottages. While these 2-bedroom/2-bath homes are connected to the community building, they also have private entrances and beautiful views of the rolling Connecticut countryside. Cottages rarely become available, but Fran was lucky enough to become our newest cottage resident. “Pomperaug Woods completely renovated my cottage with new floors, paint, and appliances, and I absolutely love it,” said Fran. “It has 9’ ceilings, so it feels very spacious. And it’s south facing, so I have sun all the time. My daughters helped me set up my Christmas Village display for the holidays this year, and after having been far away on the West Coast for 27 years, it really felt good to be ‘home for Christmas’.”
Fran takes a very proactive approach to making a new life for herself at Pomperaug Woods. “I ran for a position on the Resident Council, and suddenly I am President,” said Fran. “What a great way to immerse myself in the community and meet everyone from the residents to the staff to the Board of Directors. I’m also hoping to start a writing club for residents. I started writing at age 72, and at age 84 it still brings me fulfillment. I’m excited to see what new adventures 2024 brings!”
Welcome home, Fran. We look forward to sharing in your Pomperaug Woods adventures!
