Meet George & Lynne Spratto
This Month's Spotlighted Independent Living Residents
George & Lynne Spratto met at a party when they lived in Washington, DC. “We both worked for the FDA,” said Lynne. “It was a very big agency, so we might never have met if it wasn’t for that party. Now we’ve been married for 57 years, and have 2 children, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. We’ve been fortunate to have had a good life so far.”
“After working at the FDA, I spent my career in higher ed,” said George. “I was on the Purdue faculty in the College of Pharmacy for 27 years and went on to be the Dean at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy for 11 years. After I retired, we moved to Connecticut to be closer to family, and we lived in Oxford Green, a 55+ community near Pomperaug Woods, for 17 years. Lynne played cards with a group of friends, and one of them moved to Pomperaug Woods. The group went to play cards in her new apartment, and Lynne was wowed. We took a tour and put our name on the wait list. We were interested in a two-bedroom floor plan and were told it would probably be at least a 1-year wait. Surprisingly, we learned an apartment was available within two months. After looking at it, we knew it was terrific. Unfortunately, Lynne had just had knee replacement surgery, and I wasn’t sure I could do all the downsizing and moving myself. Fortunately, Pomperaug Woods connected us with Pam Peck, a downsizing specialist. Her assistance was invaluable.”
“Pam not only helped us figure out what furniture would fit best in the new apartment, she also helped us find a way to keep the items that were truly special to us,” said Lynne. “George had spent over 50 years collecting ceramic pharmacies. He had almost 80 of them! He picked out his 40 favorites, and Pam had shelves built in the second bedroom to display them all. It’s beautiful! I collect Waterford crystal, and Pam came up with the brilliant idea to convert one of the hall coat closets into a china cabinet. Now, the first thing people see when they come into our apartment is all of my Waterford. It means the world to me!”
“Now that we’re here, we’re so grateful for all the services that are available to us,” said George. “No need to grocery shop or cook anymore. It’s a pleasure to just walk to the dining room for a meal. The laundry is simplified because our weekly housecleaner also washes all the sheets and towels for us. Such a help! From the Administration team to the Maintenance crew to the Dining staff, I appreciate all the support. It leaves us so much more time to just enjoy life. Moving here was a good choice for us.”
“Everything is so convenient here,” said Lynne. “I can do my PT right in the Health Center, and George doesn’t have to drive me anywhere. I just walk to the Ace of Hearts room to play cards three times a week, and we go to Wilson Hall to enjoy the music entertainment. George has been elected to the Resident Council so he’s very busy with that, and he also enjoys the weekly cocktail hour to visit with new friends.”
“We’re exactly where we should be,” said George. “It’s been a good move for us.”
We think you’re exactly where you should be, too, George and Lynne. Welcome home!
