Meet Kate Jackson

This Month's Spotlighted Independent Living Resident

At Pomperaug Woods, it doesn’t take long before you hear someone ask, “Have you met Loretta?” The 50-pound Portuguese Water Dog has become a celebrity, and her owner, Kate Jackson, couldn’t be happier. “I found a place where everyone loves Loretta,” said Kate.

Kate’s life has always been guided by service. Born in New York City and raised in New Hampshire, she served with AmeriCorps VISTA in the Ozarks, then built a career in federal service — from anti-poverty initiatives during President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty to roles protecting whistleblowers and safeguarding bank depositors. “It was a very exciting time,” said Kate. “I was proud to be part of efforts to improve the lives of others.”

She married her husband, John — whom she first met at age 11 — later in life, and they shared 30 wonderful years together in Bethlehem, Connecticut. After his passing in October 2023, Kate knew she wanted peace of mind for the future. She had long admired Pomperaug Woods from afar. “I just loved the aesthetics — the green open spaces, the walking trails,” said Kate. “It looked like a beautiful college campus — someplace vibrant and welcoming.”

Kate started by taking a tour. “I was very drawn to a first-floor apartment with a patio,” said Kate. “Lots of natural light, easy access to the outdoors for dog walks, very peaceful and quiet.”

Loretta’s needs mattered to Kate. Born during COVID, Loretta hadn’t had much early socialization. Today, she happily strolls the campus on her leash (everywhere except the dining room). “Everyone here is so good to Loretta, especially the players of our Mexican Train group,” said Kate. “I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Kate was relieved to find that friendships formed quickly. “We’ve created a ‘found family’ here,” said Kate. “People are so kind, and the staff is incredible.”

An active contributor by nature, Kate now serves as President of the Resident Council. “I think it’s our responsibility to partner with the staff to contribute to the excellence of the community,” said Kate. She’s inspired by neighbors who lead classes and activities — even a spirited Viking Chess group that’s sparked new friendships. “It gives everyone such a sense of purpose to pursue new interests together.”

Evenings are Kate’s favorite. Sitting on her patio, looking up at Jupiter or Mars, she finds quiet joy. “I decided to move for peace of mind — knowing support is here if I ever need it,” said Kate. “But I’ve also found something just as important — camaraderie.”

Looking back, Kate feels grateful — for her years of service, for love found later in life, and for this new chapter. “It’s been an interesting life,” said Kate. “I’m quite lucky indeed.”

We’re the lucky ones to have you and Loretta as part of the Pomperaug Woods “found family.” So glad to have you!
