Meet Kay Marcoux
This Month's Spotlighted Resident
Kay Marcoux has curated a varied and interesting life for herself, pivoting here and there to pursue specific interests or moving to different locations. “I’ve lived in a lot of wonderful places throughout my life — Pittsburgh, Washington DC, Cleveland, Block Island, and now Southbury,” said Kay. “I’ve also been lucky enough to have had many different careers — working as a secretary for the federal government, being a social worker, traveling the East Coast as a college admissions counselor, and being a partner in an interior design business. With each change, I embraced the moment, and that’s what I did when I moved to Pomperaug Woods. I enjoy every day here because I have just enough socialization and just enough privacy to make me feel comfortable. It’s the perfect fit for me!”
Kay lived in Heritage Village for 10 years but had grown tired of cooking for herself and tending to her big garden. “I knew I wanted to move to a community that had support in place because you never know what the future holds,” said Kay. “I liked Pomperaug Woods because it was small, personal, friendly, and they serve good food. The administration was also very open to allowing me to make structural changes to my apartment to get it to my liking. I have a 2-bedroom/2-bathroom apartment on the third floor, with a beautiful deck looking out on the flowerbeds. I wanted to turn the second bedroom into a den, so they allowed me to take out the door and widen the entry so that the den flows directly from the living room. When my children visit, they can either sleep in the living room or they can stay in the guest rooms that Pomperaug Woods has available for residents to reserve for company. With the Health Center here, I know there will always be care available to me, no matter how my health needs change. My son said, ‘If your plan was to keep us from worrying about you, you’ve succeeded!’ My four children and five grandchildren are so happy to see me happy here at Pomperaug
Woods.”
Kay has always been an active member of the library in every community she has lived in throughout her life, and she has continued to pursue that interest at Pomperaug Woods. “When I moved here, I was friends with the woman who ran the library here,” said Kay. “She asked me if I would take the reins. I’ve been working with great committee members on expanding our library’s collection. I also write a column about the library for our monthly resident newsletter and write reviews of new book purchases. I want residents to know what a great library we have. It is small but mighty!”
Kay enjoys plenty of activities within the community. “I take exercise classes three times a week,” said Kay. “I love to go on the Waterbury Symphony trips. I enjoy lectures and concerts. I don’t feel pressured to do anything, but when something piques my interest, I jump in. That’s what makes Pomperaug Woods the perfect fit for me — lots of options, no obligations.”
