Meet Peggy Gloria
This Month's Spotlighted Resident
Peggy is a dynamo. She is outgoing, well-spoken, and dresses like a true fashion diva at almost 90 years old. Peggy just laughs at the compliments.
“I guess I would say I’m the type of person who always wants to keep growing,” said Peggy. “My husband, Jack, and I moved to Pomperaug Woods in 2012, and we loved it all right from the start — the people, the activities, the food, the fun. When my husband passed in 2016, I was so grateful to be surrounded by supportive friends here. I have lived a very full life, raised seven smart, hardworking, kind children, and I have traveled the world. And even with all I have seen and done over the last 89 years, I feel like Pomperaug Woods opened a window on a whole new life for Jack and me. My life was always full but moving here really added a new dimension to it. When your heart is open, there is always room for more joy.”
Peggy has enjoyed making the most of all the services and amenities on campus over the last 11 years. “I have made great friends with so many people here,” said Peggy. “I go on all the daytrips to museums, the theater, and the movies. Lisa does an amazing job with activities. I’m a regular at Jeffrey Engel’s Music Appreciation class. And Dr. Hunt’s lectures are always fascinating. I learn so much from both of them. I’m also on the Resident Council and I really enjoy attending the Board meetings. My days are full. My life is full.”
Peggy suffered a slip and fall several years ago and was very impressed with the care she received at Pomperaug Woods. “I somehow slipped and hit the back of my head in the bathroom,” said Peggy. “I had my wits about me and pulled the safety cord, and security was in my apartment in under a minute. They had me at the hospital so quickly and got my daughter on the phone with my doctor. I have seven children, eleven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren, so I have plenty of people to take care of me. But Pomperaug Woods takes such good care of me that my family never has to worry. There is a culture of kindness here, and I am so happy to call it my home. My kids are happy too. They don’t have to worry about every little thing because I’m completely taken care of here.”
As Peggy relaxes on her balcony, watching two doves feather their nest in a nearby tree, she smiles. “I have zip lined over the rainforest in Argentina. I have ridden in a hot air balloon over the pyramids. And I moved into Pomperaug Woods in May 2012,” said Peggy. “Those were all important milestones in my life. All of them were exciting. All of them were happy. And all of them were something I would recommend to any of my friends. I know it’s no small decision to decide to move. I did it many times in my life because my husband was in the Navy, and we moved so often for his job. So, when we decided to move to Pomperaug Woods, we thought this was a place we could put down roots and be happy. And I am. I honestly think Pomperaug Woods is a place anyone could be happy.”
