Meet Bill & Marilyn Simon
This Month's Spotlighted Resident
While change is never easy, being proactive about making a big change to your life often gives you the energy and perseverance to see it through. That was the experience Bill and Marilyn Simon had when they considered downsizing and moving to Pomperaug Woods. “We have been married for almost 69 years,” said Marilyn. “We lived in Bethany, Connecticut, for 35 years and raised our children there. When they were grown and gone, we moved to a condo in Southbury, Connecticut, where we enjoyed life for 23 years. As the stairs there began to be troublesome, and the joys of grocery shopping and cooking began to diminish. I knew it was time to make a change.”
“When we visited Pomperaug Woods, it felt like everything we needed was right there,” said Bill. “Pomperaug Woods connected us with an indispensable downsizing service which helped us decide what we’d need to bring, what would fit, what to save, and what and how to discard the rest. Our apartment is comfortable. The food is varied and delicious. And the endless list of events and activities keeps us both as busy as we’d like. The entire staff is warm and welcoming and calls you by name immediately after your arrival. A special touch!”
“I have always kept busy,” said Marilyn. “Living here, I don’t have to spend time meal planning, shopping, cooking, or cleaning. Our nice housekeeper cleans our apartment each week, and the laundry service washes and folds our sheets and towels. Each morning I walk down the hall to get our continental breakfast, and at night we go to the dining room for dinner or have it delivered to our door. We are free to participate in the chair exercise class, join in on the current events discussion group, or even get the tech volunteer to help with our computer. We both play cribbage and have found other residents who also play the game. Just when I thought my calendar was full, my neighbor, the director of the Pomperaug Players theater group, asked me to be her assistant. It has been fun helping prepare for the holiday show ‘Scrooge with a Twist.’ I also find time to volunteer every week at Safe Haven, the local thrift store where I’ve worked for 23 years.”
The Simon’s children and grandchildren were very supportive of their decision to move to Pomperaug Woods. “Our family is very important to us,” said Bill. “We have four children, six grandchildren, and two ‘greats’ all scattered around the country. We do a weekly family Zoom each Wednesday at 7:30p, which really keeps us connected. They were becoming more and more anxious about the condo stairs and the danger of us driving in bad weather, so they were relieved when we decided to make the move. If any of our family want to visit, they can stay in the Pomperaug Woods guest suite, or the staff will bring a cot to our apartment. It’s so easy!”
Thank you, Marilyn and Bill, for joining the Pomperaug Woods family!
