Meet Veronica Boyce

This Month's Spotlighted Independent Living Resident

Veronica Boyce is someone who takes charge of her own destiny. “I went to college in the 50’s when most women didn’t prioritize their education,” said Veronica. “I graduated with a teaching degree in 1957, and taught 4th and 5th grade in the Bridgeport school district for four years. I got married and moved to Fort Bliss, TX, because my husband was in the Army. After he had completed his time in the service, we moved back to Connecticut. I started my own nursery school and successfully grew my business for 32 years while raising my two daughters. Eventually I retired, and my husband and I parted ways. I moved to Heritage Village, where I lived for 23 years. Two years ago, I had some health issues, and I ended up in the hospital. After I was discharged, I spent a month in Pomperaug Woods Rehab to regain my strength. I was so impressed with the care I received here that I decided to become a resident. I’ve lived in the Health Center as a Skilled Nursing resident for two years, and I couldn’t be happier. Pomperaug Woods has lived up to all my expectations — excellent care, wonderful staff, and great food. What more could I ask for?”

Veronica is very impressed with her physical therapy support. “The physical therapy staff at Pomperaug Woods is a great group,” said Veronica. “The physical therapist assessed my condition and told me that she could improve my mobility. There is a machine in the physical therapy gym that helps me stand and work on my balance. And we also work on improving my upper body strength. The physical therapy group doesn’t have to do this. But they saw a need, and they are confident that they can improve my quality of life by improving my mobility. With their support and motivation, I have a goal and a plan to get there. The staff treats me with respect and wants the best for me. I respect their expertise and put in the hard work to reach the goal. Pomperaug Woods is changing my future for the better!”

Veronica has so many wonderful stories of ways that Pomperaug Woods has already improved her life. “When my daughter comes to visit, we make a reservation at a local restaurant, and the Pomperaug Woods wheelchair transport gets us to our lunch date,” said Veronica. “They make it possible for us to have a fun afternoon together. Or last week when my other daughter stopped in and brought us sandwiches to eat for lunch. My sandwich was so big that I ate half at lunch and the other half at dinner. The next thing I know, Jimmy from Dining Services is at my door. When I didn’t come to the dining room for dinner, he wanted to stop in and make sure I was feeling all right. That’s how much the staff here cares about me. If I had to give advice, I would tell people to move to Pomperaug Woods. Not all senior living communities are the same. Here, I am treated like a well-loved family member. Come for the care. Stay for the warmth.”
