Meet Lynda DeLuryea

This Month's Spotlighted Independent Living Residents

Lynda DeLuryea has always embraced the adventure of a move.  Over a lifetime that took her from U.S. military bases to Casablanca, Morocco, and later to Paris, France, she learned how to build a home anywhere.  Along the way she taught high school French, worked as a travel agent helping others do what she loved, and taught English as a Second Language through Literacy Volunteers of America.  She and her husband, Robert, raised two children, welcomed five grandchildren, settled in Danbury then Newtown, CT, for a total of 53 years.  Now, Lynda is embracing her new life at Pomperaug Woods.

A Promise to Her Children

Watching both their parents and in-laws take responsibility for their own care by choosing to live in a senior living community with Life Care, Lynda and Robert vowed to do the same.  They toured several communities and joined the wait list at Pomperaug Woods.  Before they could move in, Robert needed short-term rehab after a hospital stay, and they chose the Pomperaug Woods Health Center.  “There is a big difference in the care you receive at the different senior living community health centers,” Lynda said.  “The care Robert received at Pomperaug Woods was outstanding.  We knew this was going to be the right community for us when we were ready to move.”

Letting Go, Moving Forward

After Robert unexpectedly passed from Parkinson’s disease, Lynda had to pick herself up and move forward — and that meant parting with sentimental belongings that had followed her through a lifetime of homes.  Pomperaug Woods connected her with downsizing expert Pam Peck to help ease the way.  “Working with Pam made all the difference,” said Lynda.  “I’m more motivated than ever to continue decluttering now that I’m in my beautiful new apartment home.”

Happy to Be a Joiner

A lifetime of experience building community from scratch helped Lynda make Pomperaug Woods feel like home quickly.  “I’ve moved around enough to know that the opportunity to join a variety of activities helps create connections,” said Lynda.  “I’ve tried many of the exercise classes here, enjoyed Current Events and Creative Arts, I’ve subbed in bridge groups and played Mexican Train, and today I’m going on my first day trip.  Fun!  This community is something special — I have received a truly warm welcome from everyone.”

Her Advice: Get on the Wait List Now

“Get on the wait list even before you’re ready to move,” Lynda said.  “If you change your mind, you can get your deposit back at any time.  You never know how your life will change, and being on the wait list is so reassuring – it’s the next step forward to your new life!”
