Meet Mollie Strugats and her Daughter, Alison DeNicola

This Month's Spotlighted Memory Care Resident

Mollie Strugats has led a life defined by resilience, love, and a touch of adventure.  Born in Southampton, England, Mollie spent her childhood attending a convent boarding school during wartime while her mother served in the Merchant Marines.  In her early twenties, she met Jack Harris, and together they began a new chapter in the United States, marrying in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and raising three children in Queens, NY.  After divorcing her first husband, Mollie later found lasting love for 45 years with second husband, Robert Strugats.  Their happiest memories were rooted in Shelter Island, New York, where summers with family eventually became year-round living.

After Robert’s passing in 2024, a fall led Mollie to a rehabilitation stay and prompted her family to reconsider what she needed most.  “We knew Mom would benefit from more support, but also more connection,” said her daughter, Alison DeNicola.  Wanting her mother close by, Alision discovered Pomperaug Woods. “From the moment I toured, I felt something special,” Alison said.  “The Memory Care neighborhood is small and personal, and the staff is genuinely kind.  I just knew she would be well cared for here.”  Mollie arrived in December 2024, and soon transitioned into Memory Care, adjusting with surprising ease.  “She always wanted to live near me” Alison said.  “This just felt right.”

Today, Mollie is not just cared for — she’s truly thriving. “My mom is a very funny, resilient, feisty woman,” Alison said. “She has a great sense of humor, and it’s a joy to share a laugh with her.” Mollie’s days are filled with connection — happy hours, holiday celebrations, concerts, Bingo, and chair yoga. “Before Pomperaug Woods, my mom spent a lot of time by herself watching TV,” Alison said. “Now she’s surrounded by friends all day long. Living here is a life upgrade for her.” Visits have become more meaningful, too. “The more compassionate you can be, the more you can just enjoy your time together,” Alison said. “My mom is so happy to see me whenever I visit.”

What stands out most to Alison is how Mollie feels about this chapter of her life. “Living at Pomperaug Woods, my mom feels good about herself,” said Alison. “She gets her hair done, everyone tells her how pretty she looks, and she just blossoms.” For Alison that peace of mind is everything. “I can just be her daughter, not her caregiver,” she said. “I’ve learned to be in the moment and appreciate all the pieces of my mom that are still so vibrant — her humor and her laughter. Pomperaug Woods has given us the gift of time together.”

We love Mollie’s laughter and her happy personality. She brings such joy to the Pomperaug Woods memory care family!
